6 Need-to-Know Facts about the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System

“What’s IS-01 all about?” We get that question a lot from teachers. And while a ton of useful information can be found on the web page for IPEVO’s IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System, we know it’s a lot to digest. So, we gathered up the most frequently asked questions to share rapid-fire style in this quick blog post.

1. Is IS-01 a projector?

No. IS-01 is a two-piece interactive whiteboard system that allows you to annotate material and interact with computer applications at the board. It requires both a projector and a computer/laptop for the complete setup.

6factofIS-01_600_01

2. IS-01 doesn’t work with short-throw projectors, does it?

It does! Don’t be discouraged if you have a short-throw projector. IS-01 connects to your computer, not your projector, so you don’t really have to worry about throw distance. Just place the IS-01’s Sensor Cam at a distance between 3.7 and 13.1 feet from the screen, and you’re good.

6factofIS-01_600_02

3. I can’t control the cursor! It jumps around when I try to use IS-01.

Infrared equipment or strong light sources can disrupt the Sensor Cam’s ability to pick up the Interactive Pen’s infrared signals. In one case, we talked with a teacher who happened to decorate his whiteboard with Christmas lights. The Sensor Cam doesn’t like those so much! So please be aware of the light sources in the room.

6factofIS-01_600_03

4. Can I use two Interactive Pens at the same time?

IS-01 doesn’t support multi-touch functions, so no. Only one Interactive Pen can be captured at a time. One exception to this is if you have two computers and two IS-01’s running side by side… which would be awesome!

6factofIS-01_600_04

5. Isn’t it really inconvenient to have to calibrate the Sensor Cam over and over?

Once you initially place and calibrate the Sensor Cam, you shouldn’t have to recalibrate it again. If you do have to move it, mark the position of the calibrated Sensor Cam for next time. And that said, even if you do take the Sensor Cam from classroom to classroom, calibration only takes a minute or so.

6. Can I use IS-01 with a TV or monitor instead of a projector?

You can… but we don’t recommend it. Here’s why. The TV/monitor screen could be scratched over time from all the Pen swipes. Also, the brightness of the monitor can cause eye fatigue over long sessions. Finally, if the TV/monitor is not firmly mounted, it might move once you start tapping, throwing off the calibration. So, proceed with caution.

We hope we’ve cleared up a few sources of confusion. Head on over to the IS-01 Product Page if you’d like to learn more or if you’d like to snag an IS-01 for your very own classroom.

Interactive Whiteboard or iPads in Your Classroom? Why Not Both!

Educators wishing to innovate with technology in their classrooms face tough decisions, particularly when dealing with tight school budgets. For example, both the iPad and the SMART Board open up interactive learning opportunities for students. But with SMART boards being so expensive (usually many thousands of dollars), sometimes it’s an “either/or” choice between purchasing an interactive whiteboard versus purchasing several iPads. Which do you choose?

IPEVO believes you shouldn’t have to choose one over the other. You can afford all the iPads your students need and still have budget left over for an interactive whiteboard by choosing the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System. This inexpensive system turns most any flat surface into a whiteboard you and your students can interact with — and at only $149, it’s thousands less than a SMART board.

There are benefits to an interactive whiteboard, including effective whole-class teaching and multimedia engagement for dynamic interactions. By involving students at the board, you’re increasing their agency, their risk-taking, and their reasoning skills. You can also spark classroom debates by presenting multiple student solutions to problems (as in math). It’s also really useful and stimulating to switch between using the whiteboard as a whole-class presentation tool and then as a learning tool for students to produce their own work for the benefit of themselves and the rest of the class.

Teachers are finding that iPads can also deliver fruitful interactions in a different way. Multiple students can participate on iPads at their desk, instead of having only one or two students at the front of the room. The teacher is also free to walk around the room and engage his or her students without being “tied” to the board. And with Apple TV and a projector, multiple student iPads can be projected onto the screen and switched between for the benefit of the class. There is also an entire universe of learning apps available on iPad that might be harder (or impossible) to project and use on an interactive whiteboard.

The key takeaway here that veteran teachers know full well — and something which ed tech researchers have concluded — is that multiple approaches to learning are best. Combining technologies can motivate and excite students, and variety staves off tedium and eliminates the frustration that comes when a student doesn’t “get it” when only one teaching method is used.

By saving thousands of dollars with IPEVO’s IS-01 in place of a SMART board, educators can purchase their needed iPads plus enjoy their own interactive whiteboard, an extremely effective (and fun) presentation tool and learning tool. Basically, you can have your cake and eat it, too!

Why sacrifice one for the other when you can have both? IPEVO’s mission is to deliver affordable teaching technology so no student is left out, and that’s what you can achieve with the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System. Check it out and imagine the possibilities.

IPEVO is One of CIO Review’s “20 Most Promising Education Technology Providers”

CIO Review, a Fremont-based technology magazine focused on business innovators, has included IPEVO in its list of the 20 most promising ed tech service providers. We are very humbled to be included with so many tech pioneers and innovators.

Check out the full article and see what our CEO and head designer Royce Hong had to say about IPEVO’s affordable tech solutions – including his explanation of IPEVO’s “only what’s necessary” philosophy that helps teachers focus on teaching instead of on complicated devices.

Creating Interactive Classrooms in a Cost Effective Way

Interactive whiteboards, digital document cameras and interactive classroom accessories are drastically changing the ways how students learn in classrooms. Right at the center of this change is IPEVO, a CA based company that provides interactive classroom equipments which are simple, powerful, and affordable.

Royce Hong, CEO and head or design at IFEVO is a man of difference. “We believe how schools and teachers benefit from using our products are much more valuable than the cold hard cash from a single transaction,” he begins. The reflection of this thought is visible from the company’s products that carry extremely disruptive pricing. “The existing interactive teaching tools are very costly and require professional installation and extensive training to properly integrate into the daily curriculum,” says Hong. “This cuts off educational institutions with limited budgets, and more often than not we see teachers struggle to master the complex technology while trying to teach at the same time,” he adds. Here is where the aesthetically designed tools from IPEVO make a difference.

IPEVO’s wide range of products including document cameras, internet conference stations, and interactive whiteboard systems are aimed at equipping all the classrooms—about 3 million in the U.S.—interactive and productive. The highlight of their product line would be the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System priced at just $149, while a conventional interactive whiteboard costs more than $2000. Adding to it, the Document Cameras Visualizers that starts from just $69 enable teachers to document and project everything, Finally, the company’s interactive classroom accessories aid the use of computers and smart devices in the classroom, “Our affordable tools make sure that no one is left out of the dream because of budget constraints,” says Hong.

For educators with truly limited resources, IPEVO has started the “Wishpool” program, where teachers write in and inform them on how the product can benefit their class. The company will then send the featured EdTech product free and the teachers are encouraged to share their stories and pictures of the product in action. “Wishpool not only supports teachers with the technology needed for their classrooms, it also helps IPEVO to better design products based on the hundreds of direct feedbacks from real classrooms,” says Hong. This “Experience-driven Design Process” ensures that IPEVO products are easy and intuitive to use so teachers can focus on educating and not on explaining how equipments work.

“Not only that, we edit our technology to ‘only what’s necessary’ configurations, using the least amount of technology to enable teachers to maximize their teaching goals,” says Hong. IPEVO also sells directly to schools and school districts, enabling them to price the products highly competitive.

In the short span of time, IPEVO has become a trusted partner to K-12 schools all over the U.S. In an effort to improve the interactive classroom experience, Randall G. Black, Technology Integration Specialist of Huntington Middle School in Huntington, WV, distributed 21 IPEVO P2V USB cameras to the teaching staff in late 2013. After a month, the survey documented that 74 percent of the teachers had installed the P2V, 79 percent had no problem installing the accompanying software, and 58 percent had implemented the P2V in their classroom instructions. This resulted in the school purchasing additional cameras.

With success stories like the above, the future seems bright for IPEVO, as they are developing new products that work seamlessly with iPads and other smart devices, unleashing the potentials of these devices for the classroom learning environment. With over 35 percent of K-12 schools in the U.S.—public and private—currently using I PEVO’s technology, the company is strongly inching towards making every single classroom engaging and productive.

Helping Visually Impaired Students with the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System

Previously, we covered some classroom solutions using IPEVO doc cams for visually impaired students. In this entry, we’ll explain how to use the IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System for the same purpose. The IS-01 setup is a little more complicated but it comes with a couple benefits, including real-time annotation of your material. This setup is also beneficial to students who might have trouble seeing marker lines on your conventional whiteboard.

To quickly summarize, IS-01 turns your existing whiteboard or flat surface into an interactive whiteboard. It does this by capturing movements you make with an Interactive Pen, and then translating those movements into mouse clicks and cursor movements. In this way, your computer’s operating system and most software applications can be controlled remotely at the board. This is great for anything from learning games to presentations and beyond.

For this setup, you’ll need IS-01, a laptop, a monitor, a classroom projector and the IPEVO Annotator software which you can download for free. Here are the steps:

1. Connect the IS-01 Sensor Cam and make sure it has a clear view of your whiteboard surface.

visually_impaired2_1

2. Run the IS-01 calibration app from the CD. In a couple of steps, you’ll ensure your IS-01 is operating accurately.

3. Run IPEVO Annotator. Annotations like text boxes, lines, shapes and highlights will appear on screen in real time to enhance and clarify your lesson.

visually_impaired2_2

4. Finally, use a VGA splitter cable to split the signal from the computer. Connect it to both your projector and to an extra monitor for your student.

visually_impaired2_3

5. Your material as well as real-time annotations will appear on your visually impaired student’s monitor as well as the whiteboard surface for the rest of the class. Pretty cool, huh? But keep in mind that your physical gestures at the board won’t be represented on the student’s screen.

We hope either a doc cam or IS-01 solution (or both) can work in your classroom to accommodate the needs of your visually impaired students. If you have questions on any of these setups, don’t hesitate to email cs@ipevo.com for help and suggestions. And if you do use one of these solutions, we’d love to hear about it! Until then, good luck and have fun.

We’ve gotten lots of feedback from teachers asking how IPEVO doc cams can help their visually impaired students in the classroom. Let’s discuss some simple setups that could help your students see teaching material better.

Doc Cam and Computer

Capturing teaching material (like what’s written on the whiteboard) and then displaying it on a computer screen is one solution that might work for your classroom.

1. Connect one of IPEVO’s document cameras, like the Point 2 View or Ziggi-HD, to your student’s computer via USB.

visually_impaired_1-1

2. Launch the IPEVO Presenter software, then enter Full Screen mode.

visually_impaired_1-2

3. Now your student can watch live video of your lesson on their own screen. Use Presenter’s 6x digital zoom to get even closer. You can even record video for later using the new version of Presenter.

VZ-1 and a Monitor

If you have a monitor (or TV) but not a spare computer, don’t worry. Use the VZ-1 Dual Mode Doc Cam to display material, particularly small print.

1. Plug in your VZ-1 Doc Cam and press the Power button.

visually_impaired_2-1

2. Connect your VGA cable to VZ-1, then connect the cable to your monitor’s VGA input.

visually_impaired_2-2

3. Now real-time video will appear on the monitor. But keep in mind you can’t record video in this setup, and there’s no digital zoom.

visually_impaired_2-3

iZiggi-HD and iPad

The iZiggi-HD Wireless Document Camera streams wirelessly right to iPad, so this setup might be the most versatile. If you have iPads in the classroom, this could be the solution for you.

1. Turn on iZiggi-HD.

visually_impaired_3-1

2. In iPad, tap Settings, then tap Wi-Fi. Choose iZiggi-HD from the available networks. Now iZiggi-HD and iPad are communicating.

3. Download and run the free IPEVO Whiteboard app from the App Store. Captured images from iZiggi-HD will be displayed in Whiteboard.

visually_impaired_3-3

4. Your student can hold iPad for a clear and personal view of material. They can even pinch zoom for a closer view.

visually_impaired_3-4

iZiggi-HD, iPad and a Monitor

If you feel like the iPad screen might be too small, you can also connect iPad and iZiggi-HD to an LCD monitor.

1. Follow the “iZiggi-HD and iPad” steps above.
2. Connect iPad to your monitor using an adapter.

visually_impaired_4-2

3. Now iZiggi-HD’s video will be displayed on iPad and mirrored on your monitor.

visually_impaired_4-3

As you can see, there are many options available to you depending on the needs of your visually impaired students, your available technology, your room setup, and your budget. Choose the solution that’s best for you. You can also consider using IPEVO’s IS-01 Interactive Whiteboard System for your visually impaired students, which is covered in our IS-01 entry. Whatever you choose, IPEVO is ready to help everyone in class see and understand your material.
